Even when knowledge is forgotten, emotion endures. Time accommodates within its memory every form of existence it has ever affirmed. It is inherent in a space where nothing needs to be erased to make room for something else—indeed, such erasure is impossible. The existence of a thing, or the memory of it, can only be diminished, reduced to the faintest trace, but it can never truly disappear. What we deny or suppress inevitably grows more defiant, whether actively or silently. The house whose path we first forgot, and then the house itself, stands at the center of a garden of ideas.
