Focusing on faces and the emotional traces left by recurring negative memories that emerge after moments when individuals feel emotionally numb—what the artist describes as “the void between dream and wakefulness”—Acar creates emotionally charged portraits that do not represent physical reality but rather function as imaginative constructs. Although these faces may reflect past or present traumas, they are presented as open-ended narratives that invite viewers to form their own interpretations.

Acar’s paintings are informed by observations of nature, society, and everyday life. At the core of his artistic practice is an inquiry into the distinction between seeing and looking, the relationship between past and present, and the layered structure of the human psyche. Focusing particularly on female portraits, the artist moves beyond conventional approaches to portraiture and treats his figures as elements of an emotional topography. These figures seek to visualize the psychological impact of contemporary global crises on the individual. Acar describes them as “portraits of emotional landscapes.”

Each work reflects repressed emotions and untold stories. Rather than imposing fixed meanings on the viewer, Acar’s paintings create a space for personal interpretation. The artist invites viewers on a journey through the fragile and silent layers of the human soul, at times evoking psychological ambiguity and at others encouraging direct confrontation.

Although the women depicted in his works appear strong and resilient on the surface, the use of cool tones such as blue and green in the background reveals their vulnerability and emotional numbness. Monochromatic backgrounds create a timeless and universal atmosphere, detached from specific spatial or temporal references. The anger and tension visible in the faces point to the traumatic realities of our time, including wars, femicides, child abuse, loss, and natural disasters.

Through the expressions of his figures, the artist conveys fundamental emotions such as fear, anxiety, sorrow, and pain, placing individual emotional experience within a universal context. Elements such as the intensity of color, the depth of shadow, and the deliberate disruption of spatial logic function as visual representations of the feelings of despair and confinement experienced by contemporary individuals.

Acar’s artistic approach resonates with Cézanne’s idea that “it is not important to paint nature as it is, but to express the emotions it evokes.”
