Sami Kurt
Sami Kurt (b. 1994, Bursa) graduated from Bursa Zeki Müren Fine Arts High School in 2012. In the same year, he was admitted to the Department of Painting at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, where he studied in Kemal İskender's studio, completing his undergraduate degree in 2019. In 2021, he successfully completed the Pedagogical Formation Program at Uludağ University. Since 2022, he has been pursuing his Master's degree in the Department of Painting at the Institute of Fine Arts, Dokuz Eylül University.
Since 2017, Kurt has participated in numerous competitions, group exhibitions, and art projects. In 2018, he held his first solo exhibition, "Silent Scream," at Maji Luxury Art Gallery & Event in Istanbul. During this period, he took part in various group exhibitions in Ankara, Istanbul, İzmir, and Bursa, and his works were acquired for the Deux Ex Machina – Sezer-Ali Ak Baret Collection.
Kurt has exhibited in group exhibitions organized by institutions including Galeri Soyut, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, CerModern, the Nâzım Hikmet Cultural Center, and the Karaca Cultural Center. He has also participated in major art fairs such as ArtAnkara, ArtContact Istanbul, and the Bodrum Art and Antiques Fair. In 2020, he took part in several online exhibitions and art projects.
Sami Kurt currently continues his artistic practice in his private studio in Bursa.
Manifesto
The artist's practice is centered on the human figure in all its contradictions, vulnerability, and resilience. For the artist, the figure is not merely an anatomical presence, but a vessel for memory, silence, lived experience, and emotional weight. Rather than representing specific identities, the figures exist as timeless protagonists through whom viewers are invited to recognize fragments of their own experiences.
Approaching both female and male figures as universal representations of the human condition, the artist uses gaze, posture, and body language to reveal psychological and emotional states that resist verbal expression. The silence surrounding these figures is never empty; instead, it carries an intense inner dialogue and emotional depth.
The artist's visual language is shaped by a delicate balance between realism and abstraction. Expressive brushwork, layered paint surfaces, and carefully orchestrated color relationships are employed not only to define the physical presence of the figure but also to evoke its psychological dimension. Color functions as more than an aesthetic element; it becomes an autonomous language through which memory, time, and emotion are conveyed.
Questions of identity, belonging, solitude, hope, vulnerability, resilience, and human relationships form the conceptual foundation of the practice. Each new painting becomes a space in which these themes are continuously reconsidered and reinterpreted. Combining academic training with an intuitive approach to image-making, the artist reimagines figurative painting through a contemporary lens, developing a distinctive visual language that reflects the emotional condition of contemporary life, social transformation, and individual isolation.
For the artist, painting is not simply a surface that represents the visible world, but a silent space of dialogue where viewers encounter their own memories, emotions, and lived experiences. Rather than offering definitive answers, each work remains an open-ended narrative whose meaning continues to evolve through the viewer's engagement.
